What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a metal finishing process (developed in the 1950s) in which a coating is applied electrostatically to a surface as a free-floating dry powder. Since its inception it has become the ‘go-to’ process for many major industries. The powder itself consists of polymer resins which are combined with other stabilizing and modifying ingredients. There are also pigments and other additives which improve the quality of the powder. The resulting finish is extremely durable and protective. This process performs far better than traditional wet paint.
There are four stages to the Powder Coating Process: pre-treatment, application, curing and cooling. In the pre-treatment phase the surface is prepared for the application by removing all surface debris. Washing, stripping paint, rinsing and degreasing occur. The powder is applied by means of an electrostatic process—this fuses the powder particles to the object through a high voltage surge. Next the object is cured at high temperatures—often as high as 400 degrees, the finish is set during this stage. The object is then allowed to cool.

Many of the problems in terms of health, fire and environmental hazards do not occur when using powder coating. Wet paint, however, is flammable, full of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and a carcinogen. Powder contains no VOCs and, due to the electrostatic application process, the transfer of this powder can be achieved with minimum waste (90%). Pollution control equipment is not needed here. Waste is minimal and disposal is safe and easy. Our powder coating process is friendly to the environment.
